In Sicily, the arrival of autumn brings with it the unparalleled aroma of cucciddati, traditional sweets that tell of ancient traditions and genuine flavors. These delightful treats, made with a soft dough of flour and lard, enclose a rich filling of almonds, dried figs, and raisins, flavored with honey and a sprinkle of cinnamon. The slow and gentle cooking allows the flavors to blend perfectly, creating a tasting experience that unfolds during holidays and family celebrations. Cucciddati are ideal for accompanying coffee after a family meal or for being enjoyed during a festive afternoon, when conviviality is the order of the day. Their preparation, which requires a certain attention and care, becomes a moment of sharing, where every step is a way to honor Sicilian tradition. With every bite, one can perceive the sweetness of the dried fruit and the depth of the cocoa, in a perfect balance of flavors that celebrates the authenticity of Mediterranean cuisine.

With the flour, lard, sugar, and a little water, prepare a rather soft and compact dough and let it rest. Meanwhile, finely chop the almonds, dried figs, and raisins, mixing them with a bit of honey and a little crushed cinnamon. Add a few tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder and place the mixture to cook in a pot over very low heat, stirring continuously until a homogeneous filling is obtained. Allow the prepared filling to cool, then shape it into rolls about four centimeters in diameter. Roll out the dough into rectangular strips about six centimeters wide and a few millimeters thick. Place the filling rolls on top, folding the dough over to seal the mixture. Cut to a length of about twenty centimeters and join the two ends: this will create rings. Make incisions on them with the tip of a knife to allow steam to escape during cooking. Brush the "cucciddati" with beaten egg and place them on a greased baking sheet in a moderate oven for about twenty minutes until they are well golden. Serve either warm or cold. A typical Christmas sweet.
